Is a Neck Lift Right for Me?

One of the first areas of the body to show the signs of aging is the neck. Often a person’s face looks young, but the aging of their neck gives away their age. Turkey neck, something we all dread, makes you look old and worn down. If you live in Hunterdon County, New Jersey or Bucks County, Pennsylvania, you can visit Buinewicz Cosmetic Surgery & MedSpa, located in Doylestown, Pennsylvania and Flemington, New Jersey to learn how board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Brian R. Buinewicz can smooth your neckline and give you a more youthful appearance with a simple neck lift procedure.

What is a Neck Lift?

A neck lift is a cosmetic surgery procedure that improves signs of aging in the neck. It involves removing excess skin and fat from the neck and tightening the underlying muscles to provide a smoother, more youthful appearance. The neck lift can incorporate a variety of techniques depending on the areas of the neck that need improvement. Depending on your desired results, we’ll help you identify which of the following techniques you can benefit from:

What Are the Types of Neck Lift Surgeries?

1

Cervicoplasty

A cervicoplasty focuses on removing excess, sagging neck skin to smooth and tighten the neck profile. Incisions are made under the chin and/or behind the ears. The skin is lifted upward and any excess skin is removed, eliminating sagging or wrinkling skin.

2

Platysmaplasty

The platysma are the muscles that extend from the collarbone area up to the jaw and face. A platysmaplasty involves tightening or otherwise manipulating the platysma muscles to improve visible neck bands. Incisions made under the chin, and/or behind the ears allowing us to tighten and smooth the muscles and produce a more youthful appearance.

3

Neck Liposuction

Liposuction is often incorporated in a neck lift to remove unwanted fat deposits, but it can also be performed on its own if patients are struggling with stubborn fat. For this technique, small incisions are made in inconspicuous areas of the neck. A cannula is inserted to gently suction out excess fat from around the chin, jawline, and neck. When combined with skin tightening and/or muscle manipulation, this can provide comprehensive neck rejuvenation.

What Can a Neck Lift Accomplish?

  • Tightens loose, sagging neck skin
  • Smooths vertical neck bands and wrinkles
  • Creates a more defined, slimmer jawline and neck profile
  • Reduces jowls and minimizes the appearance of a double chin
  • Diminishes a "turkey neck"

Are You A Candidate For A Neck Lift?

The best candidates for a neck lift are those who:

  • Have early to moderate sagging skin
  • Have muscle banding under the chin
  • Have a “turkey neck”
  • Have jowls or a double chin

Questions For Your Consult

How Long After a Neck Lift Consultation Is the Surgery?

Generally, the time between your consultation and your neck lift surgery will be somewhere between 1 and 6 weeks. The exact time between the two will depend on a few factors. One major factor is our practice availability, as Dr. Buinewicz performs your entire procedure. Additionally, some patients may need a few weeks to fully prepare for surgery, which may include discontinuing the use of certain vitamins, drugs and medications that can negatively interfere with treatment.

How Much Does a Neck Lift Cost?

The average cost of neck lift surgery varies from one community to the other with some small variations. Factors, such as the facility where the neck lift will be performed, type of anesthesia and other issues, come to bear on the final cost of the neck lift surgery. Hunterdon County and Bucks County neck lifts vary in price range according to these factors. Buinewicz Cosmetic Surgery & MedSpa makes neck lift surgery procedures available and affordable for everyone. Our office provides a wide array of payment options, including easy financing. What is Neck Lift Surgery Like?

What Happens During Neck Lift Surgery?

A neck lift is often compared to a facelift since both address similar issues. During a neck lift, Dr. Buinewicz will make incisions in order to access the neck muscles. Through these incisions, he will tighten the muscles and relieve them of any banding effects. Dr. Buinewicz will also remove fatty tissue to create a tighter neckline. Additionally, he will remove and tighten excess skin as needed to produce the desired results. The final step in the procedure is to suture the incisions, followed by applying a dressing to the neck. Sometimes drains are resumed for 24 hours.

How Long is Neck Lift Recovery?

While neck lift surgery produces dramatic rejuvenation and contouring of the neck area, there is a recovery period to allow the body to heal properly. Patients need to be prepared for a period of limited activity, discomfort, and swelling during the weeks following a neck lift procedure. Here is a general neck lift recovery timeline:

Week 1
During the first week after your neck lift, the focus is on allowing the incisions to heal and controlling any swelling or bruising. We encourage patients to take it easy and limit straining or vigorous movements of the head and neck. Some swelling and discomfort is to be expected. Resting with your head gently elevated can provide relief.

Weeks 2-4
After your first week, you’ll have a follow-up visit with Dr. Buinewicz to remove stitches. You may gradually increase your mobility, but you should continue to refrain from any heavy lifting or strenuous exercise. The bruising and swelling should start improving significantly at this point. We suggest resuming light home activities at the 2 week mark. If your job duties are not physically demanding, you may feel ready to return to work during this time.

Weeks 4-6
Approximately 4-6 weeks after surgery, most patients experience greatly reduced swelling and discomfort. You’ll begin noticing the results of your neck lift, although you may experience some residual swelling that persists for a bit longer. You can cautiously return to more normal activity levels by 6 weeks, however vigorous activity and exercise should still be avoided.

2 Months and Beyond
After two months, you can expect clearance to resume exercise and more strenuous activities. It remains important to follow all of Dr. Buinewicz’s specific post-procedure guidelines. Complete resolution of swelling could take as long as 2-3 months, after which time your final results will be fully visible!

Post Surgery Frequently Asked Questions

Should I Get a Neck Lift or a Facelift?

Whether to have a neck lift or a facelift is a common question, since both target signs of aging in areas that often change simultaneously. There are some key differences you should consider when making this decision. When considering a neck lift, keep in mind that it specifically addresses aging issues isolated to the neck region. This includes loose skin, vertical bands, and excess fat under the chin. It smooths and tightens the neck itself but does not improve the mid or lower face. A facelift, on the other hand, focuses on lifting and tightening the lower 2/3 of the face. This improves sagging jowls and creases by the nose and mouth. For comprehensive face and neck rejuvenation, you might want to consider combining a facelift and a neck lift into one procedure.

Is Neck Lift Surgery Covered by Insurance?

Neck lift surgery is almost never covered by health insurance since it is considered an elective, cosmetic procedure rather than a medically necessary one. You can expect to be responsible for the full cost of your treatment.

How Long Does a Neck Lift Last?

Though a neck lift does not stop the aging process, the rejuvenated appearance of the neck can last upwards of 10 years for many patients. Those who undergo a neck lift in their 40s and 50s, when signs of neck aging are still mild to moderate, tend to enjoy longer-lasting results. Maintaining your weight, wearing sun protection, practicing careful skin care, and avoiding smoking will all help extend your youthful neck contour.

Where are the Incisions for a Neck Lift?

The incisions for a neck lift depend on the specific techniques being used, but are typically placed inconspicuously so that any resulting scars are hardly visible. In most neck lifts, the incisions are made under the chin and/or behind the ears within the hairline. This allows concealment of any resulting scars, while giving Dr. Buinewicz optimal access to the underlying anatomy of the neck.
