What is Body Contouring?
Body contouring is an overall term that describes a group of cosmetic surgery procedures that are designed to sculpt and reshape the body. These procedures are most often used to remove stubborn fat deposits from various areas of the body that do not respond to diet and exercise. Dr. Buinewicz offers a number of body contouring procedures, and he'll help you decide which individual procedure or combination of surgical procedures are right for you, depending on the amount of fat you want to remove from your body and the specific areas you'd like to target.
Benefits of Body Contouring
Shedding excess pounds through diet and exercise has many health and psychological benefits, but any substantial weight loss--especially massive weight loss--can leave stubborn, sagging fat and excess skin in certain areas of the body. Body sculpting procedures can eliminate these unsightly side effects of substantial weight loss and smooth out the contours of your body to provide the finishing touch to your weight loss transformation. Body contouring treatments not only result in a more toned and sculpted physique, but they can also boost one's confidence, self-image, and self-esteem. Most of our body contouring patients have been very pleased with the improved fit of their clothing and the overall improved comfort and confidence they feel in their newly toned and sculpted bodies.
Types of Body Contouring Offered By Buinewicz Plastic Surgery
The following links explain the body sculpting procedures we offer in greater detail. If you have additional questions and would like more information, please call our office to schedule a one-on-one consultation with Dr. Buinewicz.
CoolSculpting® is an FDA-approved noninvasive and nonsurgical procedure that eliminates excess body fat using a technique called cryolipolysis. This treatment freezes and crystallizes targeted fat cells for elimination from the body without harming or damaging surrounding tissue.
EMSCULPT® is the only non-invasive body sculpting treatment that helps you build muscle. Not only do you have more definition, but muscle also helps to burn excess fat more efficiently.
EMSCULPT NEO is an advanced body shaping procedure that combines both electromagnetic energy and radiofrequency energy. This electromagnetic energy stimulates muscle contractions in the body, forcing the muscles to adapt and grow stronger.
Liposuction (Lipoplasty/Suction Lipectomy)
Liposuction is one of today’s most popular sought-after cosmetic surgery procedures. It is used to remove excess fatty tissue from areas around the thighs, knees, buttocks, waist, hips, tummy, chin, cheeks, neck, and upper arms. During the procedure, Dr. Buinewicz uses a small, stainless steel tube, called a cannula, and a powerful suction pump to create tiny tunnels through layers of fatty tissue. After surgery, these tunnels collapse, resulting in improved body contour. While the procedure is not a substitute for healthy diet and exercise, it can help to alleviate troubled areas that are unresponsive to typical weight-loss methods.
Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
Dr. Buinewicz has performed tummy tucks for many years, providing his patients with flat, toned waists. It is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures in the nation, and it is frequently sought after by his patients.
An abdominoplasty removes the excess skin from the tummy and tightens the muscles to shape and define the abdomen. The procedure lasts between two and five hours, and general anesthesia is administered. Two incisions are required – one near the pubic area which runs from hipbone to hipbone, and the other around the navel. The surgeon stretches the skin flap over the tightened muscles, removes the excess skin, and reattaches the navel.
A mini tummy tuck is an ideal alternative to the traditional tummy tuck procedure for people who only have moderate amounts of excess fat and skin to remove from the lower abdomen.
Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that removes excess folds of skin from the labia to rejuvenate and reshape the labia minora. Although many women undergo this procedure for cosmetic reasons, labiaplasty can also alleviate common medical problems and general discomfort caused by an elongated or enlarged labia.
The mommy makeover is a combination of plastic surgery procedures (breast augmentation, breast lift, tummy tuck, mini tummy tuck, CoolSculpting®) that are performed simultaneously to restore to a woman's body to its pre-pregnancy appearance.
Arm lifts remove skin and fatty tissue that have become inelastic due to weight gain, weight loss, or aging. During the procedure, surgeons reshape the under portion of the upper arm to tighten, smooth and improve the arm’s definition. The procedure is often coupled with liposuction.
A thigh lift removes excess skin and fatty tissue from the upper legs, on the inner or outer thigh. There are two types of thigh lifts – medial and lateral. Medial thigh lifts target the inner thigh and are executed through a surgical incision in the inner thigh along the groin. Lateral thigh lifts target the outer thigh, lifting the thigh and buttocks. The incision is made from the groin to the back of the body.
Candidates for such a procedure generally have loose, inelastic skin as a result of extreme weight loss due to diet, exercise, or bariatric surgery. Thigh lifts are frequently coupled with other procedures, such as breast lifts, face lifts, and arm lifts, to reduce excess skin and restore a desired proportion.
For patients who have lost significant amounts of weight due to childbearing, diet, exercise, or bariatric surgery, a body lift provides a way to retain the desired body proportion. Body lifts improve shape and tone by removing loose skin from the torso and upper legs. They are often combined with other procedures such as breast lifts and arm lifts.
Am I a Good Candidate for Body Contouring?
The best candidates for body contouring are adults who have achieved and maintained their ideal weight, but may still have stubborn, sagging fatty deposits and excess skin that they'd like to eliminate. The overall health of the patient is the most important factor when planning a body contouring procedure. Body sculpting procedures are not one-size-fits-all, and Dr. Buinewicz's approach to contouring problem areas of the body is tailored to each patient's condition and desired outcome. Patients should understand the limitations and side effects of certain body sculpting procedures, such as scarring, and have reasonable expectations of what body contouring procedures can achieve.
