What is Liposuction?

Liposuction remains one of the most popular cosmetic treatments in the world with hundreds of thousands of procedures carried out every year. The goal of this surgery is to remove stubborn body fat that is not responding to dietary changes and exercise. Liposuction can remove fatty tissue from the neck, cheeks, stomach, upper arms, hips, thighs, legs, and buttocks.

Benefits of Liposuction

When compared to many other forms of cosmetic surgery, liposuction is much less invasive. Patients who are devoted to healthy lifestyle habits will be glad to hear that the results can be permanent as long as they do not gain additional weight. Liposuction can be a standalone procedure or carried out in conjunction with other treatments to sculpt a trim and toned appearance.

Who Are Ideal Candidates For Liposuction?

Practically any healthy adult who is no longer happy with their appearance due to localized body fat will make an excellent candidate for liposuction. Everyone who is considering liposuction should be close to their ideal weight and ready to make sweeping lifestyle changes. While liposuction physically removes the fatty tissue, it cannot prevent you from gaining weight in the future. Patients should also inform the surgeon of any medical conditions that could interfere with the results of their recovery.

When to Consider Liposuction

  • If you have specific pockets of fat that are disproportionate to the rest of your body
  • If you would like to tone and contour areas of your body that are resistant to diet and exercise
  • If you have relatively good skin elasticity (liposuction does not tighten skin)

How is Liposuction Performed?

After making a small incision, Dr. Buinewicz will withdraw the excess body fat with a small metal rod known as a cannula. The cannula withdraws the fat cells with suction in order to create empty tunnels. Following your liposuction procedure, the tunnels collapse and create a contoured appearance. This procedure should not be viewed as an alternative to regular exercise and a healthy diet.

Liposuction Recovery

Patients should expect swelling and bruising for at least a week after their surgery, but both of these issues should begin to subside after the first few days. Once the inflammation has gone down, our team can then remove the stitches, and you can carry out non-strenuous work. For most patients, the bruising completely disappears within two to three weeks. Patients can resume all normal daily activities once the area is no longer swollen or numb. We suggest that all patients begin exercising as soon as they have fully recovered.

What Happens If I Gain Weight After Liposuction?

After the fat cells have been extracted, you will most likely not gain weight in that area again. That being said, you can continue to gain weight almost anywhere else in your body. This procedure is best suited for patients who are willing to lose more weight or stay within a healthy weight range.

How Does Abdominal Liposuction Different From A Tummy Tuck?

Also referred to as abdominoplasty, the tummy tuck is another popular cosmetic procedure. Some fatty tissue is removed during both of these surgeries, but tummy tucks are much more complicated. In addition to removing fat, the surgeon will also reposition the underlying muscles and remove extra folds of skin. Liposuction is less invasive than a tummy tuck, but no changes are made to the muscles or skin during this procedure. As a general rule, full tummy tucks are more invasive and have a longer recovery time.
