What is a Breast Lift?
During the aging process, the skin’s natural elasticity decreases, and gravity begins to alter the shape and appearance of women’s breasts. When combined with pregnancy or nursing, these factors often diminish the youthful shape and firmness of the breast. A mastopexy can surgically raise and reshape breasts, and reduce the size of the areola (the darker skin surrounding the nipple) to restore a youthful appearance. When breast implants are used in conjunction with a breast lift, the procedure can increase both breast firmness and size.
When To Consider A Breast Lift
- If you have sagging breasts due to changes in your weight
- If you are no longer happy with the placement of your breasts due to a pregnancy or breastfeeding
- If your cosmetic surgeon does not believe that breast implants alone will help you achieve your cosmetic goals
- If the tissue surrounding the nipples or areolas has become stretched
Related Procedures to a Breast Lift
A breast lift can either be carried out as a stand-alone procedure or in combination with any number of additional surgeries. Many women who opt for breast lifts also undergo tummy tucks and breast augmentations.
Benefits of a Breast Lift
- Your breasts will have a more youthful appearance
- An improvement in the shape, symmetry, and position of your breasts
- Improved self-confidence in and out of clothes
At the time of your consultation, Dr. Buinewicz will provide recommendations with regard to the size and contour of the breasts, as well as the positioning of the breasts to restore a youthful breast appearance.
Am I A Good Candidate For A Breast Lift?
Any patient who is no longer happy with their appearance because of sagging or uneven breasts will most likely make a great candidate for a breast lift. In many cases, patients benefit from combining breast lifts with breast implant procedures. Multiple procedures are often needed to help a patient meet their cosmetic goals.
The following are some common reasons why you may want to consider a breast lift:
- Your breasts no longer have substance or firmness
- Your areolas or nipples are positioned downward
- There is poor symmetry between your breasts
- One breast no longer appears to be firm or in the correct position
- Your breasts are pendulous
- You do not plan on having more children or breastfeeding in the future (women who plan on having additional children should consider postponing their surgery)
As a general rule, women who are in relatively good health and have realistic expectations make excellent breast lift candidates.
The Breast Lift Procedure
Most breast lifts are carried out under general anesthesia, which means you will be completely asleep throughout your procedure. After the anesthesia has been administered, Dr. Buinewicz will make two to three cuts along the natural contours of each breast. The majority of breast lifts require incisions just below the areolas and nipples. Once the incisions are made, the areolas and nipples are moved to new positions and the remaining soft tissue is adjusted. By moving the soft tissue, the patient’s breasts appear to be perkier and positioned higher on the chest. At the end of the procedure, Dr. Buinewicz stitches the incisions shut and applies a compression garment or wrap.
Breast Lift Recovery
While every patient is slightly different, most have their dressings removed within three days of their surgery. If surgical drains were placed within the incisions, then those tubes will be removed after five to seven days. At that time, patients can resume non-strenuous work.
Over the following weeks, patients will experience sensation in their nipples and areolas once again. That is a sign they are nearing the end of their recovery, and the support bra is no longer needed. Within the next few months, the swelling should go down, and your breasts will begin to rest in their natural position.
Can I Breastfeed After Breast Lift Surgery?
Women should delay their breast lift surgery until they believe they will no longer have more children. The results of these procedures can be affected by any changes to a woman’s weight or her hormones. That being said, a breast lift should not affect a woman’s ability to breastfeed.
How Much Does a Breast Lift Cost?
Dr. Buinewicz offers financing to all patients who are considering this surgery. In addition to financing, we also accept personal checks, cash, and most major credit cards.
