Is a Facelift Right for Me?

Although the effects of aging cannot be hindered, many people opt to refresh their appearance with a facelift. This medical procedure is called rhytidectomy and is one of the world's most popularly performed plastic surgery procedures. Buinewicz Plastic Surgery is located in Doylestown, PA and Flemington, NJ, and is led by board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Brian R. Buinewicz who provides rejuvenating facelifts for men and women who reside in Hunterdon County, NJ and Bucks County, PA.

What Is a Facelift?

A facelift addresses and removes facial wrinkles and sagging facial skin caused by aging. Facelift techniques vary from less invasive to more sophisticated, extensive facial surgery. More extensive plastic surgery may include the removal of excess skin, tightening facial tissue and muscles and the restoration of facial and neck skin. The complete treatment of facial sagging, jowls, marionette lines and the treatment of a double chin are completed together and hold the reputation as the "gold standard" for a complete facial rejuvenation. Every year, thousands of men and women have facelift surgery completed and are enjoying the pleasing results.

What Are The Types Of Facelift ?

1

Traditional Facelift

During a traditional facelift, incisions are made along the hairline and around the ear, allowing the surgeon to lift and reposition underlying facial tissues, remove excess skin, and tighten remaining skin for a more youthful appearance. This procedure can address deep wrinkles, sagging skin, and jowls, resulting in a more defined jawline and smoother, more toned skin.

2

Mini Facelift

A mini facelift is a less invasive alternative to a traditional facelift that can provide subtle rejuvenation to the lower face and neck. This procedure involves smaller incisions around the ears, and in some cases, under the chin. The surgeon will lift and tighten the underlying muscles and tissues, removing excess skin as needed. A mini facelift can address mild to moderate sagging skin and wrinkles, resulting in a more refreshed and youthful appearance.

What Can a Facelift Accomplish?

  • Uplift and rejuvenate many areas in the face with just one surgery
  • Re-contours the neckline and jawline
  • Tightens and lifts the skin to smooth out lines and wrinkles
  • Results that reduce your visible age by 10 to 15 years
  • Lasting results that are enjoyed for over 10 years

Questions For Your Consult

How Long After a Facelift Consultation Is the Surgery?

Generally, the time between your consultation and your facelift surgery will be somewhere between 1 and 6 weeks. The exact time between the two will depend on a few factors. One major factor is our practice availability, as Dr. Buinewicz needs to be available for your entire procedure. Additionally, some patients may need a few weeks to fully prepare for surgery, which may include discontinuing the use of certain vitamins, drugs and medications that can negatively interfere with treatment. Any patient undergoing a facelift over the age of 40 also needs an EKG by their medical doctor.

How Much Does a Facelift Cost?

The facelift procedure is customized to each person's particular requests, and the cost varies between patients based on their procedure selections. Buinewicz Plastic Surgery proudly provides financing to our patients in order to offset the cost of the procedures. The office will also accept personal checks, cash, and credit cards.

What is Facelift Surgery Like?

What Happens During Facelift Surgery?

Facelift surgery can be performed using different types of anesthesia, depending on the patient's individual needs and preferences. The most common types of anesthesia used for facelift surgery are general anesthesia and twilight anesthesia. You can rest assured Dr. Buinewicz will help you select the anesthetic technique that will optimize your comfort and safety.

As surgery begins, the facelift procedure includes the removal of excess skin, the tightening of underlying muscle tissue, the re-sculpting of facial contours and the redraping of the facial skin. Sagging jowls, facial skin, and loose neck skin are removed to rejuvenate the appearance.

The incisions are discreetly made along the edge of the hairline at the temples, as well as behind and in front of the ears. The facial skin is lifted, the underlying muscles are tightened and re-sculpted, excess skin is removed, and the facial skin is then tightened over the re-sculpted muscles. An extraction of fat may also be required and would then be completed through a tiny incision that is hidden under the chin.

What are the risks of facelift surgery?

The most common risks associated with facelift surgery include infection or severe bleeding. Together, however, these complications occur in less than 1% of facelift procedures. Furthermore, Dr. Buinewicz’s focus and expertise on facelift techniques help to minimize the risks associated with facelift surgery. As with any major surgery, there will always be risks involved - but under the care of a qualified and experienced surgeon, any significant complications become extremely unlikely.

    What is Facelift Recovery Like?

    How Long is Facelift Recovery?

Facelift recovery time can vary depending on the extent of the surgery, the patient's health, and other factors. Additionally, mini facelift patients will experience shorter recovery times than traditional facelift patients. In general, however, patients can expect to experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort in the first few days and weeks following the procedure. Here is a general timeline of what to expect during facelift recovery:

    Week 1

After the surgery, patients will need to rest and keep their head elevated to reduce swelling. Pain, bruising and swelling will peak around 3-4 days after surgery and will gradually improve from that point. Sutures are often removed at the end of the first week.

    Week 2

Most patients can return to work and light activities after 1-2 weeks, although they may still have some residual swelling and bruising. Patients should avoid strenuous exercise and other activities that could increase blood pressure or heart rate.

    Weeks 3-6

Swelling and bruising should continue to improve, and most patients can resume their normal activities after 4-6 weeks. Patients may be advised to avoid direct sun exposure and wear sunscreen to protect the skin.

    Months 3 and Beyond

Final results of the facelift should begin to become apparent around 1-3 months post-surgery, as swelling continues to subside and tissues fully heal. Patients should continue to follow their surgeon's instructions regarding skincare and sun protection.

    Post Surgery Frequently Asked Questions

    Is Facelift Recovery Painful?

While the facelift procedure is not painful at all, patients should expect some pain during the recovery process. It is during this period where the body is healing and feels the trauma of the surgical process. Fortunately, this pain should only last a few days, and can be managed with pain medications and other post-operative techniques.

When Will I Feel Back to Normal After a Facelift?

The recovery timeline after a facelift varies for each individual and depends on several factors, including the extent of the surgery, the patient's overall health, and how well they follow their aftercare instructions. In general, patients can expect to look and feel presentable after several weeks, although a complete recovery can take a few months longer.

What Results Can I Expect From a Facelift?

Dr. Buinewicz will illustrate your potential results during your facelift consultation. After discussing your treatment goals and identifying the appropriate surgical techniques, you and Dr. Buinewicz can explore potential outcomes through before and after photos of previous patients. However, it’s important to keep in mind that it can take up to several months for your final results to become visible. Once evident, the results from a facelift are expected to last approximately 10 years. However, it’s important to keep in mind that a facelift does not stop the aging process. Your appearance will continue to change over time, which is why it’s important for patients to practice healthy lifestyle habits that will prolong their results.
