Capsular contracture is a potential complication that can occur after breast implant placement. When a foreign object, such as a breast implant, is placed in the body, the natural response of the immune system is to form a thin layer of scar tissue around it. This scar tissue is known as a capsule. In some cases, the scar tissue capsule can thicken and tighten, leading to a condition called capsular contracture. What is Capsular Contracture Treatment Like?
What Happens During Capsular Contracture Treatment?
During your acoustic sound wave treatment, a special gel is applied to the area where the capsular contractures are located. Then, using a probe, gentle shockwaves are passed through the skin, which stimulates lymphatic drainage. The drainage starts the process of scar tissue breaking down. Additionally, the acoustic energy stimulates new blood flow to the tissue enhancing the healing process. Each treatment takes between 15 and 20 minutes.

How Do I Know If I Need Capsular Contracture Surgery (Capsulectomy)?
Patients with Grade IV severity capsular contracture symptoms may not be eligible for the acoustic sound wave treatment. In these cases, we may recommend capsulectomy surgery. Capsulectomy is the surgical removal of the scar tissue capsule surrounding the breast implant. During the procedure, Dr. Buinewicz will remove the thickened capsule entirely or partially to relieve the constriction and allow for a more natural breast shape. In some cases, the implant may be replaced, removed or repositioned during the capsulectomy.
How Can I Improve the Results from Capsular Contracture Treatment?
Studies have shown that compliance with at-home post-procedure protocols is a key component to achieving a successful result. Importantly, this includes vigorous massage two to three times per day in between treatments. This helps break down the scar tissue to improve comfort and mobility in the treatment area. After your recommended treatment sessions, we reassess firmness and tightness during a 6-week follow-up visit. At this point, we can re-evaluate your results and determine whether you can benefit from additional treatment sessions.
Are the Results from Capsular Contracture Treatment Permanent?
Acoustic sound wave treatment delivers improvements in breast softness, pain reduction, and decreased scar tissue formation. However, these results should not be considered permanent. There is always a risk that capsular contracture can return with the formation of new scar tissue. While this is uncommon, patients need to understand that acoustic sound wave treatment is not necessarily a permanent solution. In the case of severe or recurrent capsular contracture, capsulectomy surgery may be the best option.
