What Are Chemical Peels?
Chemical peels are cosmetic treatments that involve the direct application of a chemical solution to the skin. This solution triggers a reaction that leads to a layer or layers “peeling” away. Chemical peels are typically made of acids, with the strength of each peel depending on the chemicals used and how long it is left on the skin.
Removing layers of skin takes away the fine lines, blemishes, and other imperfections found in those layers. Also chemical, peels stimulate newer, healthier skin cells to grow. Exfoliating also keeps pores more open, which can help to prevent future acne breakouts.
What Chemical Peels Are Available at the Philadelphia Area’s Buinewicz Cosmetic Surgery?
We offer two types of chemical peels at our medspa: superficial/light and medium.
Superficial/Light Peel
This is a milder peel that targets just the topmost layer of skin. A light peel is typically chosen to provide a brightening effect, as well as address tone and texture irregularities. Treatments are fairly quick and provide a fresh appearance, so you can get back to work and other activities sooner. Keep in mind that most light peels require several treatments in order to achieve the desired look.
Medium Peel
A medium peel targets wrinkles and lines as it penetrates several layers below the surface. Because these are stronger peels, the appointments take more time—especially after the treatment session. Expect to take some time for recovery. Certain chemical peels require a week or two so that the skin can heal.
What Is the Chemical Peel Experience?
Once we determine that a peel is the ideal approach for you, as well as which peel to choose, we will prepare your skin by cleansing it. One of our doctors will apply the appropriate solution directly to your skin, then leave it on for a predetermined amount of time. After removing the solution, we may apply cold compresses for comfort and a neutralizing solution to ensure the chemical peel has stopped working. The entire process can take anywhere from half an hour to 90 minutes.

What Happens After a Chemical Peel?
Specific side effects and results depend on the type and strength of the peel applied, but all patients can expect some redness is the following days, as well as what gives the treatment its name: peeling. Stronger peels will cause dead skin to gradually flake off, revealing a smoother complexion and fresher appearance. It is very important to avoid UV exposure in the days after a peel, since your skin will be particularly sensitive and vulnerable to sun damage.
