What is a Breast Lift?

During the aging process, the skin’s natural elasticity decreases, and gravity begins to alter the shape and appearance of women’s breasts. When combined with pregnancy or nursing, these factors often diminish the youthful shape and firmness of the breast. A mastopexy can surgically raise and reshape breasts and reduce the size of the areola (the darker skin surrounding the nipple) to restore a youthful appearance. When breast implants are used in conjunction with a breast lift, the procedure can increase both breast firmness and size.

What Can a Breast Lift Accomplish?

  • Lift sagging breasts
  • Improve breast shape and contour
  • Rejuvenate the appearance of the breasts
  • Reposition the nipples and areolas
  • Enhance breast symmetry
  • Boost self-confidence and body image

Are You A Candidate For A Breast Lift?

The best candidates for a breast lift are those who:

  • Have sagging breasts due to changes in weight
  • Are no longer happy with the placement of the breasts due to pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Cannot achieve their cosmetic goals with breast implants alone
  • Have stretched tissue surrounding the nipples or areolas
  • Are non-smokers in overall good health
  • Have realistic expectations for the procedure
  • Fully understand the surgery, risks, recovery, and what to expect

Questions For Your Consult

Can a Breast Lift Be Combined with Other Procedures?

Yes, a breast lift can be combined with a variety of procedures. Most often, however, patients choose to combine their breast lift with a tummy tuck or a breast augmentation. For those who have experienced pregnancy, weight loss, or aging, a breast lift with a tummy tuck can address sagging breasts, excess abdominal skin and muscle laxity in one procedure. For patients who want to restore volume and fullness to the breasts while also addressing sagging, a breast lift with a breast augmentation is highly effective.

How Long After a Breast Lift Consultation Is the Surgery?

Generally, the time between your consultation and your breast lift surgery will be somewhere between 1 and 6 weeks. The exact time between the two will depend on a few factors. One major factor is our practice availability, as Dr. Buinewicz needs to be available for your entire procedure. Additionally, some patients may need a few weeks to fully prepare for surgery, which may include discontinuing the use of certain vitamins, drugs and medications that can negatively interfere with treatment.

Is Breast Lift Surgery Covered by Insurance?

In general, breast lift surgery is considered a cosmetic procedure and is not typically covered by insurance. Insurance providers typically view breast lift surgery as an elective or aesthetic procedure rather than a medically necessary one. However, there may be exceptions in certain cases where breast lift surgery is performed for reconstructive purposes, such as correcting significant breast asymmetry or addressing functional issues caused by sagging. In such cases, if a medical necessity can be established, insurance coverage may be possible. It is important to check with your specific insurance provider to understand their coverage policies and criteria for breast lift surgery.

How Much Does a Breast Lift Cost?

The average cost of breast lift surgery varies from one community to the other with some small variations. Factors, such as the facility where the breast lift will be performed, type of anesthesia and other issues, come to bear on the final cost of the breast surgery. Hunterdon County and Bucks County breast lifts vary in price range according to these factors. Buinewicz Cosmetic Surgery & MedSpa makes breast surgery procedures available and affordable for everyone. Our office provides a wide array of payment options, including easy financing. We also accept cash, major credit cards and personal checks for breast lifts and other procedures.

What is Breast Lift Surgery Like?

What Happens During Breast Lift Surgery?

Most breast lifts are carried out under general anesthesia, which means you will be completely asleep throughout your procedure. Pain blocks are performed by an anesthesiologist to minimize postoperative discomfort.  After the anesthesia has been administered, Dr. Buinewicz will make two to three cuts along the natural contours of each breast. The majority of breast lifts require incisions just below the areolas and nipples. Once the incisions are made, the areolas and nipples are moved to new positions and the remaining soft tissue and breast tissue is adjusted back to its normal position. By moving the soft tissue, the patient's breasts appear to be perkier and positioned higher on the chest. At the end of the procedure, Dr. Buinewicz stitches the incisions shut and applies a compression garment or wrap.

What are the risks of breast lift surgery?

The most common risks associated with breast lift surgery include changes in sensation, asymmetry and wound healing issues. Together, however, these complications occur in less than 1% of breast lift procedures. Furthermore, Dr. Buinewicz’s focus and expertise on breast surgery techniques help to minimize the risks associated with breast lift surgery. As with any major surgery, there will always be risks involved - but under the care of a qualified and experienced surgeon, any significant complications become extremely unlikely.

What is Breast Lift Recovery Like?

How Long is Breast Lift Recovery?

The breast lift recovery process is complex, as it requires an initial period of downtime, followed by some restrictions and mild symptoms, after which point patients can finally resume their normal lifestyles. For most patients, the breast lift recovery timeline looks like this:

Week 1

In the first few days of recovery, patients will need to rest as much as possible with very limited activity. Patients can expect bruising, swelling and discomfort during this time that can be managed with medications and other recovery techniques. While every patient is slightly different, most have their dressings removed within three days of their surgery. If surgical drains were placed within the incisions, then those tubes will be removed after four to five days. At that time, patients can resume non-strenuous work.

Week 2

You may still experience some swelling, bruising, and mild to moderate pain. You should continue to avoid any heavy lifting or activities that strain your chest muscles. Light activities such as walking are encouraged, as they can help facilitate the recovery process. It's important to avoid sleeping on your stomach to prevent any added stress to the breasts.

Week 3-6

During this time, patients will notice that sensation begins to return to their nipples and areolas. This is a sign that the recovery process is almost complete. During this stage, you can discontinue the use of your support bra and return to wearing a normal bra.

Months 3-6

Within the next few months, the swelling should go down, scars will begin to mature, and your breasts will begin to rest in their natural position.

Post Surgery Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Breastfeed After a Breast Lift?

Women should delay their breast lift surgery until they believe they will no longer have more children, as the results of these procedures can be affected by changes to a woman's weight or her hormones. In most cases, a breast lift should not affect a woman's ability to breastfeed, but it is something you should discuss with Dr.  Buinewicz prior to your breast lift surgery.

When Can I Wear a Regular Bra After a Breast Lift?

The timing for transitioning from a surgical bra or compression garment to a regular bra after a breast lift can vary depending on Dr. Buinewicz’s recommendations and your individual healing process. Typically, after the initial healing period, which is around 4 to 6 weeks, Dr. Buinewicz may allow you to switch to a regular bra. When transitioning to a regular bra, it's generally recommended to choose a supportive bra with no underwire to avoid putting unnecessary pressure on the incision sites. Soft, non-padded bras with wide straps and good support can be a comfortable choice during the early stages of recovery.

What Results Can I Expect From a Breast Lift?

While the results of a breast lift are not permanent, the procedure can provide significant and long-lasting improvements. Natural changes in breast shape and position can still occur over time. Dr. Buinewicz will illustrate your potential results during your breast lift consultation. After discussing your treatment goals and identifying the appropriate surgical techniques, you and Dr. Buinewicz can explore potential outcomes through before and after photos of previous patients. However, it’s important to keep in mind that it can take several months for your final results to become visible.
