Is Rhinoplasty Right For Me?

This page contains all the information you need to start and follow through with your rhinoplasty journey. Buinewicz, offers rhinoplasty for men and women residing in Bucks County, PA and Hunterdon County, NJ.

What Is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, sometimes referred to as a “nose job,” is among the most popular plastic surgery procedures. Rhinoplasty may be performed to increase or decrease the overall size of the nose, remove a hump, alter the tip or the bridge of the nose, increase or decrease the width of the nostrils, or change the angle between the nose and upper lip. These enhancements typically result in a greater balance between all the facial features. There are two types of rhinoplasty procedures: cosmetic and functional. At Buinewicz Cosmetic Surgery & MedSpa, we always address the function and the shape of the nose at the same time.

What Are The Types Of Rhinoplasty Surgeries?

1

COSMETIC NASAL SURGERY

The main goal of cosmetic nasal surgery is to give the nose improved balance with the rest of the face. Whether the nose is too large, small, wide, etc. nose surgery brings this feature into harmony with the rest of the facial features and brings more prominence to the central feature of the face, the eyes. Cosmetic nasal surgery (rhinoplasty) can remove prominent features, such as a hump on the bridge by carefully sculpting the cartilage and bone that makes up that part of the nose. A wide or large nasal tip can be refined by meticulously sculpting the cartilages that make up the tip of the nose. A droopy nose can also be resolved with similar techniques.

2

Functional Reconstructive Nasal Surgery

The goal of functional nasal surgery is to improve airflow through the nose. One way to do this is by straightening the nasal septum, which is the cartilage and bone that separates the nose (and nostrils) into two halves. A deviated septum can obstruct airflow and cause headaches, snoring, daytime sleepiness and sinusitis. Another way to correct breathing ability is by reducing the size of the turbinates.  These are important structures which help by warming air and protecting the body from allergens, such as pollen. When they become enlarged, they can obstruct airflow, causing similar symptoms to those caused by a deviated septum.

Questions For Your Consult

How Long After a Rhinoplasty Consultation Is the Surgery?

Generally, the time between your consultation and your rhinoplasty surgery will be somewhere between 1 and 6 weeks. The exact time between the two will depend on a few factors. One major factor is our practice availability, as Dr. Buinewicz needs to be available for your entire procedure. Additionally, some patients may need a few weeks to fully prepare for surgery, which may include discontinuing the use of certain vitamins, drugs and medications that can negatively interfere with treatment. Additionally, we ask all of our patients over 18 years old or those under 18 with medical problems to obtain a medical clearance from their primary medical doctor before nose surgery. Any patient undergoing rhinoplasty over the age of 40 also needs an EKG by their medical doctor.

How Much Does Rhinoplasty Cost?

The average cost of rhinoplasty varies from one community to the other with some small variations. Factors, such as the facility where the rhinoplasty will be performed, type of anesthesia and other issues, come to bear on the final cost of the nasal surgery. Hunterdon County and Bucks County rhinoplasty varies in price range according to these factors. Sometimes, insurance companies can offset the cost of rhinoplasty when certain mitigating circumstances are present. Buinewicz Cosmetic Surgery & MedSpa makes facial surgery procedures available and affordable for everyone. Our office provides a wide array of payment options, including easy financing. We also accept cash, major credit cards and personal checks for rhinoplasty and other procedures.

What is Rhinoplasty Surgery Like?

What Happens During Rhinoplasty Surgery?

Nasal surgery is usually performed under “twilight” anesthesia where the patient breathes without the use of a tube in the airway throughout the procedure. The patient sleeps throughout the procedure, has no recollection of the procedure and has no discomfort whatsoever throughout the procedure. On occasion, if indicated, the procedure may be performed under general anesthesia. We perform our nasal surgery procedures in our state-accredited operating room under the anesthesia care of board-certified anesthesiologists. Rhinoplasty generally takes 1.5 to 3 hours and is usually an outpatient procedure, although the exact duration of the surgery will depend on the surgical techniques used.

A “closed rhinoplasty” involves incisions made within the nostrils. This is used for minor nose surgeries and has a limited ability to make changes.

An “open rhinoplasty” involves incisions made within the nostrils and incisions across the tissue between the nostrils, called the columella.

We do not pack the nose after rhinoplasty, and we use absorbable sutures that do not need to be removed. The incisions used during rhinoplasty are almost always on the inside of the nose. On rare occasions or in some revision rhinoplasty cases, an incision in the crease at the bottom of the nose may be needed. In our practice, however, this is a rare exception and not the norm.

What is Rhinoplasty Recovery Like?

How Long is Rhinoplasty Recovery?

The nose job recovery process is complex, as it requires an initial period of downtime, followed by some restrictions and mild symptoms, after which point patients can finally resume their normal lifestyles. Even at this point, however, it can take several more months for residual swelling to completely fade and reveal the full results of treatment. For most patients, the nose job recovery timeline looks like this:

Week 1
In the first few days of recovery, patients will need to rest as much as possible with very limited activity. Patients can expect bruising, swelling and discomfort during this time that can be managed with medications and other recovery techniques. Light walking is permitted and encouraged, but patients should not be working or participating in any strenuous activities.

Week 2
Most patients return to work during or after the second week of recovery. During this week, patients start easing back into their routines, but still have some limitations on their physical activities.

Weeks 3-6
During this period, patients should be almost completely back to their normal routine as major side effects fade. Patients will still need to abstain from strenuous exercise and sporting activities that could cause trauma to the nose, as it will continue to be fragile through the end of this period.

Months 3-6
At this stage, most visible side effects should have healed and patients should be back to their normal routines without any restrictions. You will also have a 3-month follow-up visit with Dr. Buinewicz to assess your results and take before and after photos.

Months 6-12
In some cases, minor swelling can persist through the first year of rhinoplasty recovery. Although you will be able to visibly appreciate the results of the procedure after a couple of weeks, it may take as long as a full year before the final results can be fully appreciated.

Post Surgery Frequently Asked Questions

Is Rhinoplasty Recovery Painful?

While the rhinoplasty procedure is not painful at all, patients should expect some pain during the rhinoplasty recovery. It is during this period where the body is healing and feels the trauma of the surgical process. Fortunately, this pain should only last a few days, and can be managed with pain medications and other post-operative techniques.

When Will I Feel Back to Normal After a Rhinoplasty?

It is common for patients to experience congestion, breathing difficulties, and changes in appearance while they recover from rhinoplasty surgery. Breathing through the nose might be slightly uncomfortable or difficult in the first few weeks following your surgery. You can expect to breathe normally within 2-3 weeks of surgery. Importantly, we advise patients to avoid blowing their nose during this time to avoid interfering with the healing process. You’ll be able to smile freely after your nose job, but you may notice that your smile looks slightly different due to swelling in the nose. Typically, the smile typically returns to normal after 1-2 months after most of the swelling heals. Because residual swelling can persist as long as a year after rhinoplasty, it’s possible that temporary changes in the smile can also continue for as long as a year, in rare cases. However, most patients feel almost entirely back to normal within 6 to 8 weeks.

What Results Can I Expect From Rhinoplasty?

Dr. Buinewicz will illustrate your potential results during your rhinoplasty consultation. After discussing your treatment goals and identifying the appropriate surgical techniques, you and Dr. Buinewicz can explore potential outcomes through before and after photos of previous patients. However, it’s important to keep in mind that it can take up to a year for your final results to become visible. This is due to the extensive recovery process that follows a nose job, which can include residual swelling for several months.
