Botox in Bucks County, PA, and Hunterdon County, NJ

Many celebrities, including Kelly Ripa and Simon Cowell, have admitted to receiving Botox injections. However, it is not the only option available for the med spa treatment of facial wrinkles. Both Botox and dermal fillers and injectibles offer great treatments for those fine lines that appear with age, but how do you know which one is best for you? The first step before deciding between Botox and facial fillers is to get the facts!

What is Botox?

Botox is a neuromodulator that causes the facial muscles to relax for a temporary period of time. Its scientific name is botulinum toxin. Botox has a well-established safety record and is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures worldwide, due to its fast recovery period and affordable cost. In 2002, the FDA approved Botox as a cosmetic treatment for facial lines and wrinkles.  Since then, it has become one of the most popular treatments for those who want to prevent the effects of aging from occurring on their face. It is also used medically to treat certain muscular conditions, such as chronic migraines.  Individuals in their twenties or thirties may choose Botox to help prevent the formation of wrinkles or enhance their overall complexion. Older patients may choose the procedure to treat existing fine lines around the eyes, mouth or forehead or to prevent new lines from forming.

What are Fillers?

Similar to Botox, fillers are injectable treatments that are used to combat the signs of aging, including fine lines and wrinkles. However, fillers do not relax facial muscles like Botox.  Instead, fillers “fill” in lines and wrinkles and “plump” the skin. They work to replace lost tissue volume in the face and neck. This is accomplished by injecting the troublesome areas with collagen. This helps to stimulate collagen growth in the face, as well as fill in existing lines and wrinkles.

Choosing Between Botox and Fillers

When deciding between the two  treatment options,  it is important to consider what type of wrinkles you want to eliminate. Botox is the better choice for dynamic wrinkles located on the forehead or between the eyebrows.  These wrinkles occur when a person is making facial expressions, such as smiling or frowning.  Facial fillers work well for static wrinkles visible even when the face is relaxed and making no expression. These areas are often located around the mouth or eyes. Knowing the difference between Botox and facial fillers and how they work matters significantly when seeking treatment for wrinkles. Whichever one you choose, both forms of treatment are very effective methods for retaining a youthful, wrinkle-free appearance.
